EDITING, LEADERSHIP, AND TEAMBUILDING !

A lot of people overlook the importance of editing, leadership, and teambuilding because they're "behind the scenes". In reality, publications, and groups in general, wouldn't be able to function without them!

Editor Prep Work

At the end of my junior year, I got selected to work as a content team editor (CTE) and I couldn't be more excited. Because of that, I wanted to be completely sure that I could be the best leader for my future staffers! At the recommendation of my teacher, I read a book titled The Radical Write and took notes on it. Along with that, I also made a vision board for my plans for the next year.

Behind the Scenes: Critiques and Edits

As a Content Team Editor this year, I've looked over and edited many stories and photos. Working with my staffers is definitely the most rewarding part of my job–I love watching them turn their stories into the amazing, award-winning pieces on our website and in our magazine.

It's wonderful to be surrounded by such a talented group of individuals. I'm so proud of everyone, especially my lovely staffers!

In terms of how to edit, it's really important to read the story before you start trying to tear it apart. And, along with that, don't tear it apart! There's no piece that's perfect on the first draft, but it's important that an editor is kind, understanding, and reasonable. No one enjoys seeing their work get scrutinized, so try to be empathetic to your staffer.

Also, keep note of the context of the piece as a whole, and basic grammar rules and functions. Editors can be wrong too, but try to avoid those mistakes to keep from confusing staffers/further hindering the draft process. Most importantly, COMMUNICATE.

Leadership

I carried my little (but heavy) Muse binder with me every day in sophomore and junior year. It was jam packed with old drafts, notes, fliers for marketing, and a reporter's notebook in case I never need to do on-the-fly coverage. The purpose of this binder is to be prepared for anything and everything that comes my way, while maintaining the integrity and quality of the Muse.

Teambuilding

Pictured to the left is a screenshot of a message I sent to my teammates and their responses (sophomore year). Through little activities and hanging out, we've come together tremendously. Being close with your peers can help you both produce better work and enjoy what you do more.
